This Week At LaB: Tuesday, November 18th
Posted November 16th, 2008 by Carsie

Due to the presence of Mike “the girl” Legett here in Philly and her exceedingly awesome classes, we’re going to change our regularly scheduled program.

Instead of holding week 3 of Jon and Carsie’s “beginner 2″ Lindy series, we’ll be passing the torch to Mike, who will wow y’all with an extremely exciting beginner/intermediate level Lindy class: Lindy Moves and Styling. For the purposes of this class: beginner/intermediate level means you’re totally comfortable doing swing-outs, and ready to add some spice to them.

If you don’t yet realize how incredibly awesome this class will be, just check out some of Mike’s own moves and styling:

Mike will be teaching some moves for the leads to wow their ladies, and if we’re REALLY lucky, she’ll teach us girls how to do those crazy-cute hip swivels (see video at :36 seconds!)

Because this is a special occasion, we’ll be charging a bit extra. This class will cost $10 (price includes entry to LaB). Those enrolled in the Beginner 2 series can pay just $5. If you don’t consider yourself at the beginner/intermediate level, or if you’re not in the mood for this class, Stuart and Cheryl will be on the other side of the pillars teaching the drop-in Lindy lesson.

Then, as always, we’ll follow up the classes with a night of Lindy- and blues-able musical confection.

LABLove: LaB’s 2nd Anniversary Bash! January 9th-11th, 2009
Posted November 12th, 2008 by Lindy and Blues

LAB is turning 2! We’ll be celebrating this glorious achievement in style, with LaBLove: a weekend of blues and Lindy workshops and dances at the Ethical Society Building on Rittenhouse Square.

All day Saturday and Sunday, we’ll have classes with Austin-based rockstar instructors Laura Glaess and Mike Roberts. Saturday classes will be all Lindy, and Sunday all blues. Classes are appropriate for beginner/intermediate level dancers and above (ask a LaBtech if you’re not sure).

On Friday, Saturday AND Sunday nights, there will be social dancing to local DJs, as well as live music from the Barbone Street Jazz Band and of course, a few special guests. ; )

For details, go here.

It’s true: LaB is moving!
Posted November 11th, 2008 by Lindy and Blues

Due to space limitations and attendance increases, we’re moving! Take the Lead has been a wonderful home for LaB’s infancy, but now that we’re big and toddling, we’re moving to the Ethical Society Building on Rittenhouse Square. The move will happen on January 13th, the first Tuesday after LaBLove, our 2nd anniversary party.

This week at LaB: Tuesday, November 11th
Posted November 11th, 2008 by Jesse

The Phillies have won, Barack Obama is our president-elect, and the Philadelphia cops have been busting the city budget with the overtime they’re raking up keeping the late night broad street crowds under control. Come celebrate a return to normal times with your regular ol’ LaB.

Carsie and Jon are continuing their Lindy series, Jesse will be teaching the introductory blues lesson with Erin, Graham will be DJing, and the rest of the gang is just glad to be dancing.

See you tonight!

Election Night!
Posted November 4th, 2008 by Lindy and Blues

Hey everyone,
Tonight is a very special night, and we will have live coverage of the election all LaB long. The projector will be up and running for your viewing and informational pleasure. So! The moral is come to LaB tonight! 1. You will be able to keep abreast of election goings-on and 2. Celebrating or commiserating is best done in good company.

See you all tonight! Happy voting!

This Week At LaB: VOTE OR BE SHUNNED!!!!!!!!!!
Posted November 3rd, 2008 by Lindy and Blues

This week we’ll be letting in voters for FREE, so be sure and pick up an “I voted” sticker at the polls. If you didn’t vote, we’ll shun you, AND charge you $5 (unless you have a really good reason, like “I’m not 18!” or “I’m Canadian!”).

And so much else is happening!

This week marks the start of our new drop-in lesson format: hour long lessons in EITHER Lindy or blues, alternating each week. This week it’s LINDY! Next week it’s blues!

On the other side of the pillar, Jon and Carsie will be launching their “Beginner 2″ Lindy Series, which is for people who attended last month’s beginner series, or people who are 100% familiar with swing outs and basic Lindy variations (we reserve the right to send you to the beginner lesson if you aren’t quite familiar). This is a four week series.

This Week At LaB: Tuesday, October 28th - Get your spook on!
Posted October 26th, 2008 by Carsie

This week we’ll be holding our first ever LAB costume contest. Costumes will be judged on awesomeness alone. Winner of the contest will be jammed (so try to wear something you can dance in), and awarded a month of free entry to LAB!

Meanwhile, local spooks and spectres will run amok. Jon and Carsie will wrap up their beginner Lindy series with some sinister swingout variations, while Stuart and Kerry haunt and horrify whoever shows up for the drop-in blues and Lindy lesson. Afterwards, all of us will get our ghoulish groove on to the spooky spins of our devilish DJs.

Save the date! Skye and Frida in Philly March 20-22nd
Posted October 24th, 2008 by Carsie

We at LAB have finally conspired to bring you the workshop of your dreams. Skye Humphries (Ithaca/DC) and Frida Segerdahl (Stockholm, Sweden) are two of the best and most accomplished Lindy Hoppers alive today. If you don’t believe me, watch this:

Lucky for us, they’re also internationally hailed teachers. They’ll be in Philly for two full days, teaching one day of beginner/intermediate Lindy and one day of intermediate/advanced Lindy. Details and registration will up in the new year, so save the date and commence anticipation.

This Week At LaB: Tuesday, October 14th
Posted October 14th, 2008 by Carsie

While Jon and Carsie thrill with the first class of their beginner Lindy series, Stuart and Kerry will chill with an hour long beginner blues lesson. Cheryl and Graham will fill our hearts with joy, until DJs Jarvis and Carsie take the stage to show their skill. Jesse, sadly, is home ill.

Beginner/Intermediate Lindy Series with Jon and Carsie
Posted October 10th, 2008 by Carsie

Starting this Tuesday, October 14th, we’ll be offering a three-week Lindy series in which we’ll teach Lindy connection and footwork, the difference between Lindy and blues, and how everybody can have a fantabulous swing out.

Come to this series if:

1) You don’t know Lindy.
2) You know blues, so you think “I guess I basically know Lindy too”.
3) You know some Lindy, but when we say “everyone who’s done 1000 swing outs, over here”, you aren’t sure if you have.
4) You know Lindy, but think the way we do Lindy is cooler :)

The series will take place at Take the Lead Studio at 8pm, just before LAB. It’s $5 per lesson and the price includes the dance (same as our regular lessons). See you there!

This week at LaB: Tuesday, October 7th
Posted October 6th, 2008 by Jesse

Whew! What a weekend. We had an amazing time at Blues Muse, and hope you did, too. Fortunately for us, one of the muses stuck around for our regularly schedule lab! Megan Adair will be teaching us a rundown on lindy moves. Don’t miss out!

As always, we have the beginner lessons. Jesse’ll be DJing a bit, and then we’ll be mixing it all up.

See you out dancing!

This week at LaB: Tuesday, September 23rd
Posted September 22nd, 2008 by Jesse

The second week of Carsie & Jon’s pre-Blues Muse blues series will be tonight. Although it’s a series, it’s pay as you go, so go… and pay.

Stuart & Amanda will be teaching the beginner lesson, Kerry will be ecstatic to be dancing, and I’ll be taking care of the rest.

See you out dancing!

Blues Muse: Housing Closes Friday, September 26

Hope to see you there!

This Week At LaB: Tuesday, September 16th

Extra! Extra!

Yet another fantastic blues series with Jon and Carsie begins tonight, this one three weeks long, beginner-intermediate level (meaning it’s appropriate for beginners AND intermediates), and formulated to prepare y’all for Blues Muse, which is only three Tuesdays away! If you wanna take it, bring $15 and your pretty face.

Jesse and Kerry will teach the drop-in lesson, ushering the newbies into the wonderful world that is Lindy and blues, afterwhich Carsie and Father Mike will spin some slammin’ tunage throughout the evening.

Workshop with Solomon Douglas And Sara Goodrich!
Posted September 10th, 2008 by Carsie

Well, holy crap! We’ve got none other than the stupendous Solomon Douglas teaching a blues workshop for you guys on Wed, Sept. 10th, along with his partner Sara Goodrich. As usual, it’ll begin at 8pm, at Studio 34 in West Philly at 45th and Baltimore.

This workshop will be an advanced-beginner/intermediate blues and Lindy workshop. Please sign up ahead of time at our registration page. As of today, September 10th, the price will be $20. Please pay at the door tonight!

Class description:

“Ahh! You got Blues in my Lindy Hop!”
“No, you got Lindy in my Blues!”

Come learn some delicious one-step patterns from Blues dancing that you can mix into your Lindy Hop. The essence that makes Lindy Hop rhythms swing is the triple-step; however, mixing in judicious quantities of Blues (with its lack of triple-steps) can add some exotic spice to your Lindy.

We’ll also cover the similarities and differences between the two dances, so that we know which dance we’re doing, and can mix and match deliberately!

This week at LaB: Tuesday, September 9th
Posted September 8th, 2008 by Jesse

This week, we’ve got guest teacher Davis Thurber teaching our intermediate lesson. Davis is a talented dancer who teaches, competes, and just plain dances all over the country! Be sure to catch the lesson this week.

Also remember that we have Solomon Douglas’ weeknight workshop this Wednesday, Sep 10th. Be sure to register early to save money.

Finally, this is the final week to get early registration for Blues Muse! Be sure to get in on it while it’s cheap!

See you out dancing!

This week at LaB: Tuesday, September 2nd
Posted September 1st, 2008 by Jesse

So it seems that my ‘Back to School’ call was a bit premature last week. In actuality, all the students will really be back in town this week, so don’t you dare miss out.

To up the ante, Carsie will be teaching a women’s solo blues routine called “Sandra’s Stroll,” and Jon will be teaching leads everything they’ll ever need to know about following. Think of this as a primer for the amazing things you might learn at Blues Muse next month!

Kerry will be DJing, Stuart’s got the beginner lesson covered, and Jesse & Jon have names that begin with J.

See you out dancing!

This week at LaB: Tuesday, August 26th
Posted August 26th, 2008 by Jesse

Back to SchoolCome on out dancing, because most of the colleges are back in session, and we should be celebrating the return of many dancers from Penn, Delaware, and TCNJ (amongst others) this week and next week. Of course, we have the last week of Stuart and Kerry’s series, and a beginner lesson as always.

I (Jesse) will probably be DJing, and we might even have a new ‘good idea/bad idea’ skit for you, so watch out! See you out dancing!
