Girls’ Movement Quality
12:30-1:30PM, Solo movement for Follows
This is not a solo blues class. This is not a follows’ class. This is a class on owning your own body, on taking away the qualification of "social", and on simply being a better dancer. This class is as much about your left eyebrow and your right pinkie as it is about your abs. This class is about the ability to capture an audience by standing perfectly still as much as it is about perfecting big moves and fancy tricks.
Dude Movement
12:30-1:30PM, Solo movement for Leads
How can we be dancers but still move like Men? How can we be Sexy yet different from the Ladies? How can we find the man’s man inside? Not the hollow shell of cockiness but the real deal. Come check out solo blues and movement quality for Men with Reuel Reis.
Active Following
1:45-2:45PM, Partnered dancing for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers
In the beginning, we teach you that to be passive is to be a follow. Wait for your leader, continue your momentum, relax, relax, relax. But the real skill of a top-notch follow isn’t passively following, or adding in independent stylings; the joy of a subtle follow is the way she affects the dance without ever causing a wrinkle. We’re going to work on deepening simple movements, altering the shape of a movement, and generally enriching the dance, while still wearing the guise of a "pure" follow.
Moving from Your Core
1:45-2:45PM, Partnered dancing for Beginner/Intermediate Dancers
This class will focus on improving connection and movement quality by initiating movement from your core. This class is especially helpful for leads who are working on clearer connection and communication, and for follows who are working on integrating styling into their dance without sacrificing connection.
— LUNCH BREAK —
Lines of Dance
3:30-4:30PM, Partnered dancing for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers
A class on styling that will take your dancing from "feels good" to "looks good." We’ll work on using our arms, heads, and legs to create lines that look nice and bluesy.
Pure Following & Waiting
3:30-4:30PM, Partnered dancing for Beginner/Intermediate Dancers
Blues music has loads of space and time. In order to reflect the music, a follow can learn to physically make space and time in her dance. This ability to physically make space will also open up to the follow a new world of options with her lead. This is the vanilla of following, this is what every flashy move and elaborate ornamentation needs to be grounded within. This class will explore this simple, yet profound basis for beautiful following.
Ladies’ Routine
4:45PM - 5:45PM, Solo Performance for Follows
There are times, ladies, when it makes you blue to know that there’s no rooster in your yard... then again, there’s nothing better than a room full of follows, fishtailing in time. This routine will be part sass, part history, and all fun.
Dude’s Routine
4:15-5:30PM, Solo Performance for Leads
A men’s blues routine to wow the ladies. Be prepared... for awesomeness.
Connected Aesthetics
4:15-5:30PM, Masters Class
In this class you will find concrete ways to subtly or drastically add to a dance conversation without distracting from your partnered connection. This class will focus on how to be in charge of your body, the ways you can change the character of the dance and all the while.....keep following! We will practice incorporating solo movement into a partnered dance without breaking connection.
Sunday, October 18th
Solo Musicality
2:30-3:30PM, Solo movement for Follows
Blues music is its own language and to speak it fluently requires some key vocabulary. When moving on your own, knowledge of this vocabulary will help you feel comfortable, solid, and fluid. This class will present these key pieces of vocabulary and how to utilize them in your solo movement.
Creating Space
2:30-3:30PM, A class on Leading
Learn how to lead in a way that’s clear and awesome and still allow follows to express themselves. Reuel and Jon are our resident experts on the topic and you will not want to miss this class!
Blues Aesthetics
3:45-4:45PM, Solo movement for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers
As a dancer, your body is your tool. Taking care of your body while still being expressive in the dance is vital to solo and partnered movement. Body alignment is also inextricably linked to breathtaking aesthetic. This class will be a chance to feel ergonomic and beautiful alignment in your own body and in your own dance. This class is the beginning of a refining process; it will give you things to work on for the next several months.
Ballet for Blues
3:45-4:45PM, Solo movement for Beginner/Intermediate Dancers
How to find your inner ballerina- and teach her to blues. Gleaning the principles of balance, grace, and turns from classical ballet, and using them to refine your blues dancing.
Connection to Expression
5:00-6:00PM, Partnered Dancing for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers
As blues instructors, one of the most common questions we hear from follows is “Do I ALWAYS have to just follow, or do I get to be creative too?” The answer: both! Our favorite blues dances are the ones which are completely, consistently connected, AND offer us the opportunity to contribute solo movements and suggest partnered movements. Through a series of exercises, this class will explore the idea that both partners can be creative contributors to the dance without “follower hijacking” or “breaking” the connection, and that connection is in fact essential to partnered creativity.
Style & Poise
5:00-6:00PM, Partnered dancing for Beginner/Intermediate Dancers
Learn to move stylishly through spins, dips, and every step you take. This class will help you move well throughout your dancing, and give you some foundations for developing your personal style.
Performance & Competition
6:15-7:15PM, Partnered Dancing for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers
This class is for students who are interested in performing, competing, looking good, and/or making their partner look good. Mike and Reuel will talk about dynamics, give individual feedback, and teach some of their competition-winning moves from BluesShout &rsqou;09. Focus will be on how followers can initiate movement and styling to wow any audience.
Blues Music
6:15-7:15PM, Partnered dancing for Beginner/Intermediate Dancers
The music comes first! This class will explore different genres, eras and tempos of blues music, and some of the partnered and solo movements they suggest.
Rhythm is Blues
7:30-8:30PM, Masters Class
Rhythmic movement is what makes blues dance BLUESY. In this class, we’ll take you on a tour of blues music from the perspective of the rhythm section players. We’ll introduce some advanced techniques for finding and expressing various rhythms with your body: the beat and the off beat; repetition and rhythmic "hooks"; more subtle counter rhythms; and finally, contributing your own rhythms that can’t be heard in the song. This class will show you how to dance like a musician, and guarantee that you never have another "boring" dance.
