Class Descriptions

Mike and Reuel

Do the Twist! (beg/int)
By combining compression/leverage, shape changes, and tone-matching, we can create intricate and interesting patterns... like the twist! This class is going to really let you explore how to lead and follow with clarity and precision; we’ll free up your repertoire and create new movements- and revisit movements you thought you understood.

Putting the Dancing Back in Your Dancing (int/adv)
When we dance together, have to be more than just leads and follows- we have to be dancers. This class will take movement quality concepts and apply them to your partner dancing, to make sure that while you’re making things work, you’re still making art.

Heap ‘o Style (int/adv)
This is a good-old-fashioned variations class. We’ll serve up a whole mess’o stuff to layer onto your basics- the gravy for your biscuit, the butter for your corn, the fishtails for your touch-steps. Bring a notebook (or a doggie bag), because you’ll be taking home plenty of ideas!

Reuel: Masculine Movement (solo, all levels)
Description soon...

Mike: “The Battle 2: Re-Match” (follows)
Solo routine for the ladies. What do you get when you divy up the genders and push play? Sass, hilarity, flirtation... come and find out!

Campbell and Chris

Finesse with Flair (int/adv)
Ballroomin’ Blues is all about a balance between smoothness and power. While we break down some of our favorite finesse-based moves, we’ll work on making them look easy but strong, contained but explosive. Careful, you might get your legs tangled a few times on your way to Ballroomin’ badass-ery!

Call and Response (beg/int)
You can’t have a conversation with only one person talking! Call and Response is about taking turns, letting your partner speak, and creating something together. We’ll even explore some solo movement - see what you can make up!

Following the Follow (beg/int)
The ideas in a Blues dance do not belong to just one person - in the conversation, both dancers speak and both listen. Following the follow is about opening the leads to being receptive, empowering the follows to suggest their own ideas, and allowing partners to build on each other. With both partners initiating and both responding, you can create a rich and supportive partnership.

Jon and Carsie

How to be an Angel (beg/int)
Before we go crazy with followers suggesting and leaders following suggestions, let's talk about what it means to be a lead or a follow. What is your job? What does your partner want from you? What does it mean to be a perfect lead or follow? We'll give you tips and technique for leading and following like an angel.

How to be a Ninja (beg/int)
Now that you know how to follow like an angel, we’ll show you how to make your partner think you’re being an angel, when actually, you’re a ninja. This class will show follows how to subtly suggest movement and styling to their unassuming leads, while maintaining connection so that the dance still feels awesome.

How to be a music Ninja (int/adv)
In this class, we’ll show you how to find rhythms and moods in the music and subtly suggest them to your partner, whether you’re leading or following.

Julie and Paul

Tipping Point (int/adv)
Counterbalance, leverage, and axis are exciting tools for the more advanced blues dancer, but why let the leads have all the fun? Learn how followers can subtly - and, more importantly, safely - suggest moves involving counterbalance, leverage, and axis changes, and how leads can be supportive, receptive, and inspired by this.

Ballroomin’: Melody and Stretch (beg/int)
Time to get jazz-y! Ballroomin’ is a style for dancing to jazzier blues songs, full of drama, stretch, and hot melodies. Learn about this dance and how leaders and followers can move and style to these sweet sounds.

Danceversation (int/adv)
You’ve heard it a million times: Dancing is a conversation. In this class, leaders and followers will learn how to speak clearly, how to listen fully, and how to express yourself while still leading and following beautifully. We’ll go over several ways for leaders to be more clear and precise, while still remaining receptive, and several ways for followers to express their ideas while still following.

Julie: Poise, Posture, Presence (solo, all levels)
What makes the best solo movement? Hint: it’s not just the moves. Come learn the little things that make a huge difference!

Jesse and Stuart

“The Battle 2: Re-Match” (leads)
Solo routine for the gentelmen. What do you get when you divy up the genders and push play? Sass, hilarity, flirtation... come and find out!

Paul, Mike, Jon, Campbell

How to Please a Muse (all levels)
What to do (and what not to do) when you’re dancing with a Muse! Four of our Muses and Dudes will share a few of their favorite skills and qualities in a dance partner, and exercises for how you can master them. They may also share a few pet peeves, and how to avoid them!

Julie, Reuel, Carsie, Chris

Blues Like Me (all levels)
How to cop the style of the Blues Muse instructors! In this class, four of our Muses and Dudes will teach some of their signature moves and stylings.
