Instructors

Adam Boehmer

Adam Boehmer in HotsyAn avid jazz dancer for over a decade, Adam invokes the spirit within. He is often sought after as an entertaining instructor and performer, or sometimes just to show up; his positive energy is relentless.

As a teacher, he presents an honest and fresh perspective on dance and boils down advanced concepts into graspable, concrete information. He believes that a good instructor is one-part dancer, one-part comedian and one-part poet. As a competitor and performer, he brings a jovial and effervescent feel to the floor. Confident in Jazz Dance as a path to one’s overall individualism, Adam stresses the break-down of preconceived notions concerning style, culture, and gender roles in dance.

He is currently on a one-year roadtrip with his partner, teaching dance and making art.

See him here in a solo performance at last year's Midwest Lindyfest.

Adam will teach with Karen Turman and take you through partnered and solo 1920s and 1930s Charleston and some sweet new moves.

Joanna Lucero

Joanna Lucero in a candlestickJoanna didn't manage to find her way to lindy hop in the small town known as New York City where she grew up. Instead, she came across the dance in the thriving metropolis of Rochester, NY where she attended college. It took her three years to find the school swing club but you know what they say -- the best things in life are worth waiting for.

She was hooked from the first swing-out. Having already had a background in ballet, tap, and partnered social dance of the spanish variety, she picked the basics up pretty quickly and then… practice, practice, practice. Her dancing developed primarily from social dancing, traveling to workshops, and exchanging ideas with fellow lindy addicts. When she dances, Joanna is a tiny bundle of energy. She finds her joy in the music. As a teacher, she strives to help her students do the same.

See her rockin' out at this year's Midwest Lindyfest with Max Pitruzella.

Joanna will teach with Reuel Reis and give you a solo routine, some science, a tick of trickery, and "Toast & Jam" (..?). Come find out what that means for yourself.

Reuel Reis

Reuel Reis Reuel's unique style of dancing holds its roots in the dirty streets of the Big Easy, where he was born and raised. Growing up, in New Orleans Reuel listend to, danced to, and even played a variety of musical styles with many challenging rhythms. Since then, Reuel attempts to imbue the spirit, culture, rawness, and variety of his hometown into every dance. Reuel currently lives in Nashville, TN, where he is a full-time Lindy Hop and Blues instructor. He also continues to teach dancing all over the country, from San Francisco to Philadelphia, from New Orleans to Cincinnati and many places in between.

See him perform a routine with JoJo Jackson at this year's Dance Rennaissance.

Reuel will teach with Joanna Lucero and give you a solo routine, some science, a tick of trickery, and some tea cakes... err, i mean "Toast & Jam."

Karen Turman

Karen TurmanKaren Turman was first seen on stage at age 9 performing a tap dance to "Lollipop" in a striped leotard and has been dancing ever since (in fact, she can still be seen dancing around in a leotard from time to time). She discovered Lindy Hop during the neo swing craze in 1998 and has never looked back. Karen originally honed her dance skills in Minneapolis, MN and now currently resides in Santa Barbara, CA.

See her perform her now famous "Country Lindy hop" routine with Andrew Thigpin at Lindy Focus.

Karen will teach with Adam Boehmer and bring on a journey through partnered and solo 1920s and 1930s Charleston and modern lindy moves.
