Class Descriptions
Partnered Classes
Acting 101: Puttin' on the Ritz! (Adv)
Meghan Lisi & Ruth HoffmanIn this class we will push you, and you will push yourselves. We’ll provide a safe space to delve deeply into music, take risks, find characters, and tell stories. Learn how to captivate your audience, whether the audience is yourself, you and your partner, contest judges, casual onlookers or a stadium full of people. Meghan & Ruth will bring their years of theatre training to coach your dancing into standing-ovation performances every time.
Advanced Awesomeness (Adv)
Campbell Miller & Chris MayerCome learn our secrets with some awesome moves! We'll show you some of our favorite intricate ideas -- are you ready for a challenge?
Assertive Feminine, Receptive Masculine (Adv)
Julie Brown & Shawn HersheyTypically we think of leads as being assertive (dictating what moves happen) and follows as being receptive (receiving moves from the lead). But in reality, the best follows know how to be assertive (without taking over) and the best leads know how to be receptive (while still leading). In this class, we'll show you how to be an assertive follower or a receptive leader, while also working on being assertive & feminine or receptive & masculine.
Blues Mad Libs (Int)
Meghan Lisi & Ruth HoffmanExpress joy, sadness, glee, laziness, hopefulness, despair... We’ll learn how to improvise and steal movement variations from each other to multiply your vocabulary. We will learn how to let the music drive the quality of the movements. By playing along with the music and your partner you can join in the creation of your very own dance aesthetic. “Ruth and Meghan will _____ your fishtails and rock your _______ off with great ______.”
Close and Close...r (Beg)
Campbell Miller & Chris MayerClose embrace is like a hug — it can be great, or it can be awkward — and without it, you miss out on a lot of Blues dancing. But don't worry! We're here to help. We'll challenge you with different variations in close embrace, and show you how to make them feel comfortable for you and your partner.
Comfy Close Embrace (Int)
Julie Brown & Shawn HersheyIt’s nice to dance close, and it's even nicer when it feels comfy and cozy! Come work on making close embrace feel The Best, so your partners will want to dance with you all night long.
Got My Mojo Workin' (Beg)
Mike Legett & Reuel ReisNow that you've learned all those nifty solo moves from the Blues Muse routine, how do you get them to work in your partner dancing? By taking this class, of course! We'll talk about how leads can create space within the connection, so that both leads and follows can incorporate all that awesome movement you've learned. We'll also talk about how to add some sizzle and spice even when the leads aren't leaving a lot of room. Bring your hips, and an extra side of sass!
Hocus Pocus (Adv)
Mike Legett & Reuel ReisPsychic following, magical illusions, and mind bullets (that's telekinesis, kyle)- what more do you need in a class? Essentially, we're going to explore the what and how of pure following, and how to still dance like yourself even when you're not layering on top of the lead.
Jukin' (Beg)
Julie Brown & Shawn HersheyJukin' is a style of dance that was done in juke joints and house parties. These dances are awesome in their simplicity and bootyliciousness, so come get your really-old-school club dancing on!
Lean On Me (Beg)
Meghan Lisi & Ruth HoffmanWant to make your dancing cozy? And controlled? And beautiful? Balance is the key to unlocking comfortable embrace and impressive moves. In this class you’ll begin to master your axis and discover how to promote your partner’s balance as well. You’ll also learn some dips and tricks to spice up your dance vocabulary. By the end, you'll be singing "Lean On Me," even as you've discovered the strength to stand on your own.
Muse Favorites (Int)
Mike Legett & Reuel ReisIn this class, we're going to explore some of Mike's favorite moves- along with what makes them so great. We're going to show off the follows, make them say, "wheee!", and generally make them feel like princesses (or princes). And of course, we're going to talk about how follows can get the most bang for their buck on these magical moments.
Turning Technique (Int)
Campbell Miller & Chris MayerTurns can be one of the most challenging elements of a dance for the follows, but can also make them really shine. Follows, we'll give you the technique and confidence to show off your turns, and leads, we'll give you the tips to support them and the moves to make them look great. Be prepared to get dizzy!
Solo Classes
Badass Battle (Follows)
Mike LegettMike is heading up the follows’ team in the Follows vs. Leads battle chography this year! Come learn some badass choreo and then perform it in the battle at the Saturday main dance.
Badass Battle (Leads)
Reuel ReisReuel is leading the leads’ team in the Follows vs. Leads battle chography this year! Come learn some badass choreo and then perform it in the battle at the Saturday main dance.
Body Movement to the Core (Follows)
Campbell MillerTo fully express each song, we want to move our bodies with lots of style while staying grounded and centered. Here we'll explore a variety of exercises and techniques to move with both core strength and relaxation, explore your full range of motion without losing your balance, and add more body control to your solo Blues movement.
Dudes' Muse (Leads)
Chris Mayer & Reuel ReisOur dude muses are teaming up to tell you all their secrets. Shhh…
Feminine Attitudes (Follows)
Julie BrownBlues music encompasses a huge range of moods--from downtrodden to joyful, coy to brazen, and much, much more. Explore some common and uncommon) blues attitudes as we delve into the music and how we can express it.
Holy Appendages, Batman! (Follows)
Meghan LisiOur feminine superpowers lie in wait...in our arms and legs! In this class we will explore some sadly underutilized parts of our anatomy. Find the ways that your arms and legs provide the finishing touches as well as the transitions and beginning flourishes. Through exploring the integration of these wonderful extensions through our bodies, we’ll also tap into our lag and suspension - make ‘em wait...we're SO worth it! (If you're up to it, you are encouraged to take this class in dance heels to add an extra balance and core challenge for yourself! - Be Safe and Know Thyself...and bring flats just in case...).
Masculine Attitudes (Leads)
Reuel ReisDescription to come!
Yes AND... (Leads)
Chris MayerContrary to popular belief, solo blues is not always all about you. Whether it's in a competition or on the social dance floor, often we ignore the other dancers and the ideas they could give us. This class is all about how to take those ideas and run with them -- about creating something new by building on what you can take from other dancers.
