The Hot Mess Comp

THE HOT MESS COMP is a unique solo jazz competition held at Philadelphia’s HOT MESS in July.

Unlike most solo jazz comps, THE HOT MESS COMP is performed in TEAMS. On Friday night July 8th, during the first band break at the main dance (between sets in the HOT MESS BATTLE OF THE HOT JAZZ BANDS), all teams will compete in COLLABORATIVE SOLO JAZZ to a series of uptempo swing and jazz songs chosen by our outstanding DJs.

Based on team performance in the prelims, HOT MESS guests including MC ADAM BOHMER will select two teams TO COLLABORATE WITH in the finals.

At the Saturday main dance, THE TWO FINALIST TEAMS will compete in a SOLO JAZZ BATTLE accompanied by the instructors who selected them. Teams will receive the competition song ONE HOUR PRIOR to the finals, and can use that hour to collaborate, brainstorm, choreograph, and prepare plays. Finals will be in "phrase battle" format, and will be judged by the audience.

THE WINNING TEAM will receive a “grab bag” of passes to regional Lindy Hop and solo jazz events such as Lindy Focus and Midwest Lindy Fest, including one pass for each member of the team.

TO ENTER, send an email including your team name and membership to our competition coordinator Breanna Perry at breannaperry@gmail.com.
