Class Descriptions
Yoga With Moriah
Moriah came to yoga in 2000 as a natural complement to her passions for dance and wellness. In 2008, Moriah completed the 200-hour certification at CorePower Yoga, where she also graduated from theExtensions yoga internship program. She has taught yoga to many groups both in Colorado and Philadelphia, most recently at Blues Muse 2011 in Philadelphia. Moriah draws upon her extensive background in dance, anatomy, and biological sciences to inspire her personal practice and teaching. With creative flows, inspirational music and hands-on adjustments her yoga classes are a trip for the soul, mind, and muscles.
Class 1 (Stuart): ABC’s of Solo Jazz
Just like Mama used to say: Use Your Words. Lets go learn ’em. 45 Solo Jazz Steps & Names. An expansion on the curiously popular Alphabetical Jazz Steps Youtube video. New steps. Same Guy.
Class 2 (Kerry): Uhhh...
We’re going to get our follow-focused groove on during this hour. Follows will learn ways to comfortably and confidently add ideas to the dance and affect the partnership while continuing to follow. Leads will learn ways to strike a balance between assertive and receptive that lends itself to appreciating the full extent of follow badassery. Note: There will be ninja-ing. Comfort with swingouts, tuck turns, and side passes required.
Class 3 (Jon): Put Your Butt Into It
This class will transform your Lindy leading/following ability. Followers will learn to add dynamics to all aspects of their following using twisty hips. Leaders will learn to use full, assertive leads that keep twisty-hipped followers coming back for more. Comfort with swing outs, tuck turns, and side passes required.
Class 4 (Carsie): How to Dance Like a Musician
In this class, we’ll define and explore some rhythmic tools in blues and jazz music including swing, syncopation, and phrasing. Then, we’ll introduce some techniques and moves to help you integrate those ideas into your dancing, so that you move musically to every beat!
Class 5 (Seth): Weight Training; Where the hell is our weight, again?
In this class we will be working on finding our partner’s weight in relation to one another so that we can move anywhere and any time we please. There will be material for leads, follows, and for the partnership itself.
Class 6 (Graham): Organic Movement
One way to increase your creativity and to have more fun with your dancing is to develop Organic Movement. This class will be a series of exercises that will help to explore what it means to have organic movement and how to achieve it in your own body and with your partner.
Class 7 (Erin): Swag Attack
swag, noun; ... the thing that makes you different... overall confidence, style, and demeanor... (urbandictionary.com). Swag is the name of the game in this class led by founding members of Philly’s solo blues dancing troop, the Bloomers. Starting with some basic vocabulary and expanding from there, we’ll focus on helping you feel more confident in your solo movement, and provide tips for how to share your swag with a partner, an audience, or just with your reflection at home!
Class 8 (Jesse): Discussion Panel
Over the last five years, we have run weekly dances, switched venues, added and lost labtechs, orchestrated dozens of workshops, created a curriculum, laughed, cried, made mistakes... and somewhere along the way we created a community and a family that we recognize as LaB. In this town-hall-style panel discussion, all the LaB Techs will cover a little history of LaB, our foundation principles, and our most cherished lessons from the last five year
